Media Justice and Technology Organizing: TWM defines the media justice movement to include media accountability, cultural work and training in new media production (film, video, radio, etc), alternative journalism, media advocacy, and virtual/real world technology organizing. TWM’s work in this area involves building more grassroots dialogues around media justice issues and partnering in local campaigns to offer strategic training, support, and coordination. Our main thrust in this program is to mobilize for a historic Media Justice gathering in Selma, Alabama, in early 2004. Similar to the first Environmental Justice summit, this gathering would stake out a separate space for communities of color and indigenous communities within and apart from the larger media democracy to draw non-traditional community organizations into a dialogue around media, technology, and cultural work issues. By gathering in Selma we would frame our meeting in the context of one of the more visible movements for self-determination within this country and provide a historicity and the needed political weight to draw in more reluctant community partners. At this historic gathering we would educate each other on our issues, develop a set of accessible principles, and invite both networks and base-building community organizations to participate with current technology, cultural, and media organizers in designing a new political platform for how this technology supports our movements.
